Proudly presents a lecture by
Jack Chambers
This talk replaces the announced lecture on "Music and Grammar" by Prof. Dresher, and in fact eliminates grammar altogether (whilst adding Elizabethan pageantry and Harlem pizzazz)
THE DUKE & THE BARD
Jack Chambers Linguistics professor and jazz expert will discuss Duke Ellington & William Shakespeare: Kindred spirits 400 years apart. In 1956, Duke Ellington played a concert at the Stratford Shakespearean Festival and he was so inspired by the ambiance that he composed Such Sweet Thunder, a "tone parallel to William Shakespeare," dedicated to the Festival. One of the treasures of 20th century music in any genre, Ellington's jazz suite captures Shakespeare's bawdy, rollicking joie de vivre in sonic capsules based on Shakespeare's tragedies, comedies, romances and sonnets.
