All graduate students must apply for external funding such as the Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) Doctorate Fellowships and the Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGS) for both MA and PhD. For details contact the Graduate Coordinator.
Connaught Scholarships
This scholarship is valued at $15,000 plus academic fees. There is no
citizenship requirement for the Connaught Scholarships or the U of T
Fellowships. All awards are granted by the individual departments on
the basis of academic excellence. Award recipients are formally notified,
normally in the late spring.
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS)
The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program is designed to encourage excellence in graduate studies at the master’s and doctoral levels.
Number of Scholarships Awarded
For the 2009–2010 academic year, a total of 2,000
scholarships will be awarded. Of these, 60 scholarships
will be awarded to students who have been admitted
to Canada as visitors with a student visa.
In addition, some of these scholarships, called institutional scholarships, will be awarded to nominated students at selected universities – namely, Brock University, Lakehead University, Laurentian University, Ryerson University, Trent University, and Wilfrid Laurier University. These universities may nominate up to ten students each for the institutional scholarships. Nominated students must pursue their graduate studies at the nominating university. To be eligible, nominees must meet the citizenship requirements, be approved by the selection board, and satisfy all conditions of eligibility. Visitors with a student visa are not eligible for institutional scholarships. For additional information about the institutional scholarships, contact your graduate studies office.
Value of The Scholarship
An Ontario Graduate Scholarship is awarded for one academic year,
which may consist of two or three consecutive terms.
One-term awards are not granted. For 2009–2010, the
value of the OGS is $5,000 per term. Thus, you may
receive $10,000 for two consecutive terms or $15,000 for three consecutive
terms. The province of Ontario contributes two-thirds of this amount and
the university provides one-third.
Your award may begin in May 2010, September 2010,
or January 2011.

helps put the benefits of research to work by promoting the transfer of knowledge among researchers, research partners, policy makers and other stake holders within Canadian society.
SSHRC's funding programs provide support for:
Basic research:
(by individual researchers and research teams) to develop new theories and better research approaches/methods; to advance fundamental knowledge of human nature/behavior and of social, economic, cultural and intellectual matters;
Targeted research:
(by multidisciplinary teams and research networks) to focus concerted, problem-solving attention on intellectual, social, economic, or cultural issues of particular interest or concern to Canada;
Advanced research:
training at the doctoral and postdoctoral level to help supply social sciences and humanities expertise at Canadian universities, in government and in various sectors of our economy;
Research communication and knowledge transfer:
to promote the use of knowledge generated by Canada's researchers and scholars.
