Interested in the history of nationalism, in particular among ethnic groups living in border areas. Has published in the fields of history, sociolinguistics, bibliography, cartography, and immigration studies.  Author of The Shaping of a National Identity (1978), Galicia: An Historical Survey and Bibliographic Guide (1983), Our People (4th rev. ed, 2005) Ukraine: A Historical Atlas (3rd ed., 1987); The Russian Americans (1989); The Rusyns of Slovakia (1993); An Historical Atlas of Central Europe (2nd rev. ed., 2002); A History of the Ukraine (1996); Of the Making of Nationalities There is No End, 2 vols. (1999); The Roots of Ukrainian Nationalism (2002); Ukraine: An Illustrated HIstory (2007); Editor-in-Chief Encyclopaedia of Canada’s Peoples (1999), and Encyclopedia of Rusyn History and Culture (2nd rev. ed., 2005).
